Why Competitors Don’t Really Matter

shutterstock_142741249_WomanWin150I know that feeling, it hits you in the gut. You’ve just heard that a new business is opening up right down the street from you and they will be a direct competitor.

It’s been hard enough growing and retaining customers as it is. Now you’re going to have another competitor. What is THAT going to do to your business?

This scenario comes up again and again, all over the world.

No one is immune to competitors. That’s why, if you are going to be in business (and actually make it), you should not only expect competitors but you should run your business like they are going to pop up all of the time.

I’m not saying you should obsess about competitors. In fact, the only consideration you should give them is to be “aware” of the products and services they offer. Any other thoughts you give them is a waste of your energy and time.

And you should never make decisions about what YOUR products, services or offerings are going to be based on what they are doing. Instead, be YOU! The focus should always be on your business and your customers. What’s good for them. What do THEY want.

Think, plan, create, innovate and deliver the most unique of all of these things all of the time. Don’t compete against others. Compete against yourself and when you do that, you will find that you will outlast and outshine any competitor that comes along.

I would even argue that the existence of competitors is a positive thing because it will make you step up your game, get creative with your programming, services and marketing and when THAT happens you could truly surprise yourself and do things for your business that you never thought possible.

So forget about them. Stay in your business by working “ON” your business. Good Luck and let me know how it goes.
